How does one undergo root canal therapy?
Root canal therapy is a dental procedure performed to treat infections at the centre of a tooth. It’s a critical treatment for resolving oral problems related to the nerve or pulp of the tooth, often resulting from deep decay, a crack or chip in the tooth, or injury.
Consultation and Diagnosis
The process begins with a consultation at a dental clinic, where a dentist assesses the patient’s dental problems to determine the need for root canal therapy. This may involve X-rays to diagnose the extent of the infection. The goal is to identify the best course of action to preserve the tooth and alleviate pain.
The Procedure
Root canal therapy is carried out in several steps. Firstly, the area around the affected tooth is numbed with a local anaesthetic. A small opening is then made in the crown of the tooth to access the infected or damaged pulp. Using specialised instruments, the dentist removes the pulp, cleans the inner chambers of the tooth (root canals), and shapes the space for filling. The canals are then filled with a biocompatible material, and a temporary filling is placed to close the opening.
Restoration
After the infection has been cleared and the tooth stabilised, a follow-up appointment is scheduled for the placement of a permanent restoration, often a crown. This final step restores the tooth to its full function and appearance, offering a comprehensive solution to the patient’s dental and oral problems.

Other prevalent concerns include gum disease, which can affect even the youngest patients, dental emergencies from accidents or falls, and malocclusion, referring to misaligned teeth and jaws that may require early orthodontic intervention. Additionally, dental erosion caused by acidic foods and drinks poses a risk to their enamel. Addressing these problems early with kid-friendly dental care ensures a strong foundation for lifelong oral health.
